According to the governor, credit growth plays an essential role in ensuring economic acceleration and breakthroughs.The SBV has set a credit growth target of around 16% in 2025, with adjustments based on actual economic conditions. "SBV will closely monitor developments; if inflation remains low, we will consider increasing this target, and vice versa. Credit policies will also focus on key economic growth drivers, including consumer credit and loans for small and medium-sized enterprises," said SBV Governor Nguyen Thi Hong.However, boosting credit requires not only efforts from the banking sector but also coordination and support from various ministries and agencies. For instance, in the case of social housing credit, Governor Nguyen Thi Hong stressed the need for multiple funding sources, particularly from the state budget. "In recent times, the banking system has demonstrated great responsibility and humanitarian spirit by voluntarily reducing lending rates. However, the implementation has faced many challenges. To resolve these issues and promote social housing credit, SBV hopes that the Ministry of Construction will collaborate with local authorities to conduct a comprehensive assessment of housing demand — including ownership, rentals, and purchases — so that bank credit can be directed effectively," the governor added.Additionally, according to Agribank CEO Pham Toan Vuong, with the banking sector's credit growth target set at approximately 16% for 2025, SBV has assigned Agribank a credit growth quota of nearly 13%, equivalent to an increase of over 200 trillion VND. If annual outstanding loans increase by VND 200 trillion, Agribank would need to supplement its capital base by VND 15-17 trillion. Therefore, the CEO proposed that the NA and the Government consider a special mechanism for state-owned commercial banks, including allocating additional charter capital from Agribank’s annual retained earnings — at least 10 trillion VND per year — starting in 2025. This would enable Agribank to fulfil its assigned political tasks and contribute to achieving the projected double-digit GDP growth for the 2026-2030 period.Meanwhile, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Founder and Permanent Vice Chairwoman of HDBank, suggested that the Government promote capital market development to reduce reliance on bank credit and support long-term growth. Additionally, she proposed timely and proactive support from the Government and SBV in the restructuring process of DongA Bank under the compulsory transfer plan. According to data from the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), the total credit scale of the economy reached over 15.6 quadrillion VND in 2024, an increase of more than 15% compared to the end of 2023. Commercial banks played a significant role in providing credit to the economy, accounting for approximately 92.6% of the total outstanding credit in the system.

Group in Binh Phuoc had met the necessary criteria for export, with the final stages of approval currently underway. Additionally, the SFA is in discussions with Masan Corporation in Ha Nam to facilitate egg imports during the second phase, and is exploring potential partnerships with other Vietnamese farms and manufacturers.Additionally, the Ambassador emphasized Singaporean companies' interest in exporting food products to Vietnam. This ecosystem encompasses a wide range of products and services, from hardware and electronics to software and advanced technologies like artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and the Internet of Things (IoT).The sector's workforce has reached over 1.67 million employees, a growth of more than 50% compared to 2019. By the end of 2023, nearly 1,900 digital technology enterprises had expanded into international markets, generating revenue of 11.5 billion USD, up 53% year-on-year.This progress has significantly contributed to the improvement of Vietnam's global innovation index each year. According to Minister of Science and Technology Huynh Thanh Dat, in 2024, Vietnam ranked 44th out of 133 countries in the Global Innovation Index, two places higher than that in 2023 and up 32 spots compared to 2013. Among these, Vietnam led the world in three key indicators: high-tech imports, high-tech exports, and creative goods exports.These figures demonstrate that the digital technology industry has become one of the most important economic sectors, helping Vietnam enhance its competitiveness, expand international cooperation opportunities, and contribute actively to building a comprehensive digital economy. It also plays a significant role in driving economic growth and sustainable development.However, alongside these successes, Vietnam still faces significant weaknesses. The Party chief pointed out that the technological level of Vietnamese businesses is generally low, with the country participating only modestly in global supply chains.Although the electronics sector has seen impressive growth, propelling Vietnam to 2nd place in the world for smartphone exports, 5th for computer component exports, 6th for computer equipment exports, and 8th for electronic component exports, 89% of the value of these components is from imported goods.For example, Samsung has invested in Vietnam since 2008, yet of the 60 Tier-1 suppliers for the Republic of Korea’s group in Thai Nguyen province, 55 are foreign companies. In Bac Ninh, the figures are 164 foreign companies out of 176. Domestic enterprises are primarily engaged in providing services such as security, catering, and waste management.The research and development capabilities of Vietnamese enterprises are still heavily reliant on foreign sources, limiting the country’s technological self-reliance. Additionally, the ability to attract high-tech talent remains insufficient, resulting in a shortage of qualified human resources, which directly impacts the capacity for innovation.The development of digital technology and digital infrastructure is not evenly distributed across regions, creating a significant gap in access to technology. This disparity affects the ability to connect the nation as a whole and hinders the sustainable growth of the digital technology industry.According to Dr. Tran Thi Tuan Anh, Vice Rector of the College of Economics, Law and Government under the University of Economics Ho Chi Minh City, to achieve sustainable economic development with the reliable support of new technologies, including AI, Vietnam must prioritise human services, ethics, and responsibility.Do Cao Bao, a member of the Board of Directors of FPT Corporation, said that the speech by Party General Secretary To Lam at the 6th national forum on the development of Vietnamese digital technology enterprises highlighted the core of the issue. (Photo: VNA)</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>Hanoi – The surge in AI demand is significantly impacting plans on data centre investment and expansion in Vietnam as global tech giants and local players are racing to capture the market.In the past year, tech behemonths like Microsoft, Meta, Alphabet and Amazon injected more than 200 billion USD into data centres and AI-related tool development, with a substantial portion flowing into Asia, where land is affordable, electricity is cheap, and demand for AI is soaring.However, most Asian data centres have not been equipped to host AI servers, presenting a significant opportunity for upgrading existing facilities and building new AI-capable data centres with better capacity across Asia.In Vietnam, local tech companies, including VNPT, Viettel, CMC, FPT and VNG, are expanding their data centres' capacity. CMC is planning to invest 500 million USD in such centres and other facilities in Vietnam, Japan, and elsewhere by 2028. Meanwhile, Viettel is preparing to carry out 11 large-scale data centres with a total designed capacity of over 350 MW, or 40% of the country’s total. It will partner with NVIDIA to develop AI data centre infrastructure featuring nearly 800 supercomputers and 6,000 GPU cards.CEO of the Viettel Internet Data Centre (IDC) Hoang Van Ngoc estimated that to serve the market of 100 million people in Vietnam with sufficient future technological services like AI, generative AI, and AI cloud computing, the size of domestic data centres must increase 15-fold.International giants including Amazon, Microsoft, Supermicro, ST Telemedia Global Data Centers, Google, and Alibaba are also entering the Vietnamese market, with planned investments worth billions of USD, intensifying the competition in the sector.According to Cushman &amp; Wakefield's latest report, Vietnam offers competitive advantages for data centre investments, with construction costs averaging 6.9 million USD per MW – among the lowest in the Asia-Pacific region, only trailing Taiwan (China). This is significantly lower than China (7.1 million USD), Thailand (7.6 million USD), Indonesia (8.7 million USD), and Malaysia (9 million USD).Cushman &amp; Wakefield Vietnam General Director Trang Bui stated that boasting reasonable construction costs and a favourable geographical location, Vietnam holds huge potential to become a large data centre in the region, referencing the interest from Apple, Intel, Canon, Samsung, LG, LEGO and Airbus as a vivid demonstration. Besides, the country's increasing transparency, openness to foreign investment, and administrative reforms are creating more opportunities for international investors and driving the growth of the data centre industry in Vietnam.However, power remains a big challenge for the development of AI data centres. Associate Director of Industrial Services at Savills Hanoi Thomas Rooney said the facilities require 2 – 5 times more power than conventional ones. Vietnam should sketch out plans to upgrade and expand the power grid while developing renewable energy solutions to ensure stable electricity supply for the operation of large-scale data centres.Meanwhile, Trang Bui said that along with stable and strong power supply, legal regulations and complicated administrative procedures remain a big hurdle to the building of AI data centres while skilled workforce in the domain is limited.Vietnam is poised to welcome a wave of AI-integrated data centre construction, primarily driven by foreign giants. He emphasised that ASEAN needs to enter the intelligent age with an ambitious mindset, ready to think deep and do big, using science and technology, innovation and digital transformation as new driving forces to create breakthroughs for regional growth.Sharing his vision of ASEAN in the future, the Vietnamese leader emphasised that in the intelligent age, a successful ASEAN needs to firmly ensure six elements: in terms of politics and security, it must be peaceful, stable, and without war; the economy must develop quickly and sustainably; regarding culture, it is necessary to promote unity in diversity, both developing ASEAN identity and preserving the identity of each member; regarding the environment, it must ensure sustainable exploitation and use, protecting the environment for future generations; in terms of society, it is necessary to ensure progress and social justice, inclusive development and leaving no one behind. To firmly step into the intelligent age, he stressed that Vietnam cannot develop at an average speed as usual.PM Chinh highlighted Vietnam's determination to develop science, technology, innovation and digitalisation through three strategic priorities of institutions, infrastructure and human resources. In terms of institutions, Vietnam has just issued Resolution 57 on the breakthrough development of science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation along with a number of laws and regulations to provide a legal and institutional framework to promote the national science, technology and innovation ecosystem.Regarding infrastructure, Vietnam will develop information technology infrastructure, especially digital databases, as a core of growth. In terms of human resources, Vietnam will prepare a quality workforce, focusing on emerging industries such as green transition and digitalisation, knowledge economy, focusing on fields that Vietnam has strengths, especially in mathematics and logical thinking, he said.The PM called for cooperation and connection between ASEAN and the world, and between Vietnam and ASEAN countries to develop together and move forward together to exploit the world’s intelligence to serve common development goals.Regarding the Myanmar issue, PM Chinh expressed his firm belief that with solidarity and unity for their common goals, ASEAN will contribute to helping peace, stability and happiness return to the Myanmar people soon.The Vietnamese leader’s frank sharing and profound comments on the vision and strategy of ASEAN in the future received response and agreement from the speakers as well as a large number of delegates.This is the last activity of the Vietnamese PM at the 55th WEF annual meeting. On the evening of the same day, PM Chinh, his spouse and the high-ranking delegation of Vietnam left Switzerland to return home, successfully concluding their official visits to the Republic of Poland and the Czech Republic, and attendance at the WEF annual meeting and bilateral activities in Switzerland.

(Photo: VNA)</td></tr></tbody></table></figure>HCM City - The woodworking industry will strive to achieve the export target of 18 billion USD for this year, the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City has said.The association along with the Binh Duong Furniture Association (BIFA), and the Dong Nai Wood and Handicraft Association (DOWA) organised a ceremony in HCM City last week to honour the Ancestors of Carpentry and celebrate the achievements of the woodworking and handicraft industry in 2024.It was attended by more than 700 delegates representing members and partners.Phung Quoc Man, HAWA chairman, said Vietnam's wood product exports last year were worth a record 16.3 billion USD after rising by 20.3% from 2023.This is a truly impressive achievement, reflecting the strength and resilience of the industry in overcoming challenges.Tran Quang Bao, director of the Forestry Department, told the event that non-wood forestry products were worth another 1.04 billion USD.As a long-standing traditional industry, the woodworking industry not only brings economic value but also plays a crucial role in preserving the national culture and creating products that proudly bear the mark of Vietnam in the international market.Vietnamese wood products are now present in over 170 countries, he said.In 2025 the wood processing and export industry would have both opportunities and challenges, with significant changes expected in international trade policies, especially in major markets like the US, he said.To achieve the export target of 18 billion USD, he urged the industry to diversify its markets to avoid over-reliance on a few major ones and leveraging e-commerce platforms.It also needs to build transparent supply chains, adopt technology in production and management, ensure traceability of wood materials, develop sustainable and eco-friendly products, and foster collaboration and innovation, he said.Associations such as HAVW, DOWA and BIFA should continue to be bridges between businesses and regulatory agencies, supporting workforce training and encouraging innovation.”Unity for collective prosperityMan said: In 2025 we will strive together with the wood furniture community to achieve the export target of 18 billion USD.The global furniture consumption is worth more than 516 billion USD a year and exports from Vietnam are still very modest, meaning that the industry still holds immense potential for growth, he said.The US, the largest furniture market in the world, is also witnessing dynamic political movements. These developments may present new opportunities for Vietnam's wood industry. If leveraged effectively, Vietnam can establish a stronger and more sustainable position in the global market.He also stressed the importance of unity between businesses in the industry to grow together.Competition is a driving force for development, but it is crucial to distinguish between healthy and unhealthy competition. Businesses should not 'get in each other's way' but should cooperate to grow together, and build the strength needed to conquer the world markets. Then, all enterprises will benefit.He said the HAWA executive board has prioritised connectivity between member businesses, enhancement of ties between associations and leveraging the strengths of different regions to achieve shared development.He referred to the unique regional characteristics of the country’s handicraft and wood industry, saying the north is a raw material supplier with large furniture production areas and distinctive traditional craft villages.The central region excels in outdoor furniture and serves as a focal point for developing plantation forests, while the south is the heart of wood processing with three major centres, HCM City and Dong Nai and Binh Duong provinces.HCM City stands out for creativity, designing, trading, branding, logistics, and finance.But connecting the three regions to leverage these values remains an unachieved goal, he said.He stressed the need for establishing connections to enable Vietnam's handicraft and wood processing industry to create a complete furniture supply chain for the global market.He also appreciated businesses for making significant efforts to invest in machinery and equipment, fostering creative design and steadily seeking to expand their markets.Enterprises have also embraced new business models and leveraged e- commerce, enabling direct exports through platforms like Amazon, Wayfair and others, he said.It is encouraging to see the active support of the Government and relevant authorities, who have joined hands with the wood industry through initiatives such as organising trade promotion programmes domestically and internationally and planning plantation forest resources, he said.Thus, the overall picture of the wood industry today can be summarised in one sentence: External conditions are favourable, and internal transformation is underway.I firmly believe that with optimism and collaboration and the spirit of unity among all of us, the Vietnamese woodworking and handicraft industry will overcome challenges and achieve remarkable success in 2025./.

Given Vietnam’s narrow geographic profile and long coastline, they suggested the country develop small nuclear power facilities along the coastal regions. Large-scale projects with thousands of megawatt capacities are too costly and require significant time to complete.Referring to the US development of compact five-megawatt reactors capable of powering some 3,000 homes as an example, Hoa and Thuy said that similar facilities could serve around 5,000 households in Vietnam.Due attention should be paid to the rational selection of power transmission infrastructure and identification of target communities and regions for nuclear power development, they said, underscoring the importance to penning tsunami mitigation plans when developing the Ninh Thuan nuclear power project.Thuy, who has participated in designing five nuclear reactors in the US, said that nuclear power plant can operate at a 93-95% capacity, which means they could generate electricity for up to 350 days annually, far surpassing the operational capacity of gas, wind, and solar energy sources.According to Hoa, initial investment in nuclear power could be big-budget but the long-term operational costs are remarkably low. Beyond electricity generation, nuclear energy could be capitalised on in such areas as agriculture, health care and desalination. In the US, a nuclear power plant could generate around 60 billion USD in economic benefit throughout its lifecycle.The two specialists said it is time for Vietnam to jump on to the global bandwagon of nuclear power development as the clean electricity will help the country to deliver on its dual goals - driving economic growth and meeting its net-zero emissions target./.

The move is part of the Government's effort to stimulate inbound tourism this year, according to the Government's Resolution No. 11/NQ-CP dated January 15, 2025.This is also a significant gesture announced ahead of Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's tour to the three European countries.This new policy shall be applied to tours organized by international travel service providers in Viet Nam until December 31, 2025.Visa exemptions will be granted to citizens of Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland for a temporary stay of up to 45 days from the date of entry for tourism purposes.Currently, Viet Nam also unilaterally exempts visas for citizens from 13 countries, namely Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the UK, Russia, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland and Belarus, with a duration of stay of up to 45 days from the date of entry.The aforesaid countries are among the largest tourist source markets of Viet Nam, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.Last year, international arrivals to Viet Nam reached more than 17.5 million, an increase of 39.5 percent from 2023.Viet Nam targets to attract 22-23 million international tourists this year, surpassing the pre-pandemic levels, said the Viet Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT)./.
